About
My research examines the phenomenon of contemporary apocalyptic and millennial thought among evangelical Americans, particularly in its cultural manifestation in popular 'rapture fiction'. My thesis and research papers pay particular attention to the Left Behind series of evangelical novels that have sold some 65 million copies and frequently occupied the number one position on bestseller lists since their launch in 1995. I am especially interested in the narrative's problematic conceptualization of human agency, and argue that this emerges at the confluence of two incommensurate ontological positions which the novels attempt to reconcile - possessive individualism, and divine predeterminism.
My methodology combines close textual analysis with intellectual history and cultural theory in order to produce a reading of the novels that situates them in their historical, cultural, and theological contexts.
