About
I am a second year PhD student at the University of Hull. My research interests centre on nineteenth century literature, with particular emphasis on the sensation writer Mary Elizabeth Braddon. My doctorial thesis moves away from Braddon’s sensation fiction, though, and is entitled ‘Brief Sensations: A Critical Study of Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Short Fiction’. My thesis includes chapters on Braddon’s life, as well as her supernatural, theatrical, detective, domestic and children’s literature. My other research interests include Victorian children’s literature, the Victorian theatre, adaptations of novels, including period dramas and neo-Victorian literature and film.
I have recently published the ‘Mary Elizabeth Braddon Author Chronology’ for The Literary Encyclopaedia and have helped to organise several conferences, such as the University of Hull’s ‘Great Expectations: Researchers in Progress’ conference (2009) and the ‘Ph.D Experience Conference’ (2011).
